Welcome! On this page, we explain step by step how this website works. Take your time. You cannot break anything.
What is this website?
This is the digital archive of the painter Thijs Sterk (1913–1982). You will find all his paintings here, with explanations and stories about his life. Everything is free to view.
How do I view the paintings?
Click on "Archive" or "Galleries" at the top.
- You will now see an overview with small images.
- Click once with the left mouse button on a painting you like.
- The painting will now open in full view, with information provided.
Tip: "Clicking" means a single brief press on the left button of your mouse. On a tablet or phone, tap the screen with your finger.
Viewing a painting up close
When a painting is displayed large, you can zoom in to see details:
- On a computer: turn the scroll wheel of your mouse, or click on the painting.
- On a tablet or phone: move two fingers apart on the screen.
- Want to zoom out? Turn the wheel the other way, or pinch two fingers together.
Back to the previous page
Are you somewhere and want to go back? You can do this in two ways:
- Click the "Back" button on the page itself.
- Or click the left arrow (←) at the very top left of your browser.
You will never lose anything. You can always go back.
Searching for a painting
Click on the magnifying glass (the search icon).
- Type a word, such as "landscape" or "portrait".
- Press the Enter key on your keyboard.
- You will now see all paintings matching your search term.
Changing the language
This website is available in five languages: Dutch, English, German, French, and Spanish. Click the language button at the top right and choose your language. The entire website will change language immediately.
The newsletter
Would you like to be notified when there is something new in the archive? Enter your email address under "Newsletter" and click "Sign up". You will then receive an occasional email. You can unsubscribe at any time with one click at the bottom of every newsletter.
Is the text too small?
You can make all text larger:
- On Windows: hold down the Ctrl key and press the + key.
- On an Apple computer: hold down the Cmd key (⌘) and press the + key.
- Too large? Use the same key with the - (minus) key.
Is the page not working?
Sometimes a page hangs. That's okay:
- Click the circular arrow (🔄) at the top of your browser. The page will then reload.
- If that doesn't help, close the browser and open the website again.
