Welcome to the Boats gallery. Water and navigation represent a lifelong fascination for Thijs Sterk. From the oppressive stillness surrounding an Amsterdams lock keeper's house to the sun-drenched inlets of Corfu and the dry-docked harbors of Normandy. To Sterk, a vessel is never mere decoration. In his early, dark works, you will recognize the powerful, monumental contours in which wooden hulls merge with the wet sand. Later, this weight transforms into fleeting watercolors, where a few precise brushstrokes capture the reflecting water. Masts cleave the canvas like sharp diagonals and the low-raking light plays with the tides. Allow yourself to be carried along these tranquil quays, where silence and movement converge on the boundary of land and water.
